I usually start out in rain water. I might change it out once or twice...but as soon as you see algae develop plant in river sand (with perhaps a small amount of dirt/organic material- but NOT too much peat).

Notice the garbage bag shade cloth. After about 93 degrees nothing will help.

Callous is good. These need a little more time.

Once they develop even a few roots they can be placed out.

(these were my rooted valentines day roses bought on clearance.....). Oh. BTW. A 25 watt pipe warmer wrapped around your pot will get you through winter, but I'm not responsible for code violations involving water and extension cords.

This will work for most all roses. Only a few want to be difficult...with those I'm using air layering. One day I would love to have a well and misting system.
